Nixa sits at about 1,300 feet on the rolling limestone upland of the Springfield Plateau, just south of Springfield and north of the deeper Ozark hill country. Southwest Missouri lies in the heart of the continent, equidistant from the Gulf of Mexico and the Canadian prairie, and the collision of those two air masses is the local weather story. Spring is unambiguously the season that matters. From March through May, strong low pressure develops over the southern Plains, pulls warm humid Gulf air north across Missouri, and organises it into squall lines that sweep east across the plateau, often after dark. The barometric signature is distinctive: a slow sag through the day as the warm sector deepens, then a sudden rise of four to six hPa within minutes as the line crosses and the cold air arrives. Winter produces the other characteristic event, the overrunning ice storm, in which mild Gulf air rides over a shallow dome of cold air trapped at the surface and freezing rain falls for hours while the barometer drifts gently upward. Summer is hot, humid and barometrically dull, with scattered afternoon storms, and autumn is typically the calmest and most settled stretch of the year.
