Nutley sits at roughly 150 feet on the floor of the Newark Basin where the Passaic River bends south, with the basalt spine of First Watchung Mountain rising a few miles to the west and Manhattan about twelve miles east. Its weather is New York metropolitan weather with two local complications. The first is the river: the lower Passaic drains a large basin through a constricted channel, and the prolonged heavy rain of a tropical remnant, of the kind the region saw from Floyd and from Irene, produces flooding well after the storm itself has moved on. The second is the Watchung ridge, whose few hundred feet of elevation are enough to put the towns on top of it on the snow side of a marginal winter storm while Nutley, in the lowland, gets sleet or rain from the same system. Nor'easters between December and March supply the year's deepest falls, twenty-five to thirty-five hPa across a day and a half, and the ocean's proximity is what makes so many of them borderline. Late summer and early autumn bring the tropical threat, when a decaying system tracking up the coast produces a broad deep minimum and rainfall totals that matter more than the wind. The dense urban surroundings keep nights several degrees warmer than the outer counties.
