Wind Speed Forecasts: What to Watch If You Are Weather-Sensitive
The number most apps show you is the sustained wind speed, averaged over ten minutes. It is the least useful of the four wind fields available. Gust speed, wind direction and the timing of the onset tell you far more about whether a day will be difficult, and all three are usually available if you know where to look. Wind is also among the best-forecast variables in meteorology — reliably good three to five days out, which is considerably better than you get for rainfall timing.
If you have decided that windy days go badly for you, the next step is learning to see them coming with enough precision to act.
The four numbers
Sustained speed. The ten-minute average at a standard height of 10 metres. This is the headline figure in most apps. It is a smoothed number and it systematically understates what you actually experience.
Gust speed. The peak instantaneous value expected. Gusts commonly run 1.3 to 1.8 times the sustained speed, and in unstable air the ratio can be higher. Gusts are what knock you about, rattle windows and wake you up. If you track only one wind number, track this one.
Direction. Given as the direction the wind is coming from — a "westerly" blows from the west. Direction identifies the air mass. A northerly in winter is cold and dry; a southerly is mild and moist; an easterly off a cold sea is raw and damp. In regions with named winds, direction is the single field that tells you which regime you are in.
Timing. When the wind picks up and when it eases. This determines whether it will disturb your sleep, whether it coincides with your commute, and whether an outdoor plan is salvageable by shifting it a few hours.
Most weather apps show one and a half of these. A good forecast source shows all four as an hourly table.
Reading the gust-to-sustained ratio
This ratio is quietly informative and almost nobody looks at it.
A low ratio — gusts only slightly above sustained speed — indicates smooth, stable flow. Typical of a steady gradient wind under an inversion. Unpleasant but even.
A high ratio — gusts well above sustained — indicates turbulent, convective conditions, or wind being disturbed by terrain. This is the gusty, buffeting kind of day, with pressure fluctuating on short timescales and considerably more noise.
Many people who report reacting to wind describe the gusty variety rather than the steady variety. If that is you, a forecast showing 25 km/h sustained with 60 km/h gusts is a very different prospect from 35 km/h sustained with 45 km/h gusts, even though the second has the higher headline number.
Direction tells you which wind it is
In any given region, the difficult wind usually comes from one particular quarter, and learning that quarter is more valuable than learning a speed threshold.
A few examples. In Southern California, a wind from the northeast is a Santa Ana: hot, extraordinarily dry, driven by high pressure over the Great Basin. A wind from the west on the same coast is a benign marine flow. Same speed, entirely different day.

The practical step is simple: go through your last year of bad days and note the wind direction on each. If a quarter shows up disproportionately, you have found something specific.
How far ahead to trust it
Wind forecasting is genuinely good, better than most people assume, because wind is driven directly by the large-scale pressure field that models handle well.
Realistic accuracy:
- 1 to 2 days: Speed and timing usually accurate within an hour or two and within about 10 to 15 per cent on speed.
- 3 to 5 days: The existence and rough magnitude of a wind event is usually right. Timing may be off by half a day.
- 6 to 10 days: Useful for spotting that an unsettled pattern is coming. Not useful for planning a specific day.
That 3-to-5-day window is the practically valuable one. It is long enough to move a commitment, and short enough to be reliable. Rainfall timing at the same range is markedly worse.
Model spread is the honest way to judge confidence. If different models agree on a windstorm four days out, take it seriously. If they disagree, wait a day before rearranging anything.
Where to find the fields
Most general-purpose weather apps hide gusts and direction behind a tap or omit them entirely. Sources worth knowing about:
- National meteorological services usually publish hourly tables including gusts and direction, for free
- Aviation forecasts, written for pilots, always include gusts, direction and a wind shift timeline, and are more precise than consumer products
- Marine and sailing forecasts are the best of all for wind, though they cover coastal waters rather than inland areas
- Windsurfing and kitesurfing sites present multi-model gust comparisons, which is exactly the model-spread view described above
You do not need to become a forecaster. You need a source that shows gusts and direction hourly.
Turning a forecast into a plan
A forecast is only useful if it changes something. A reasonable protocol:
Three to five days out. Note that a wind event is coming. Check whether anything demanding is scheduled for that day and consider moving it.
Two days out. Confirm timing. If the wind peaks overnight, plan for sleep protection — earplugs, white noise, windows closed on the windward side.
The day before. Front-load hydration. Avoid stacking other triggers: no late night, no skipped meals, no alcohol.
On the day. Cover your head and neck outdoors. Keep acute medication accessible rather than at home in a drawer. Reduce screen and sensory load where you can.
Afterwards. Log gusts, direction, minimum humidity and your symptoms with times. Six months of that turns a hunch into a pattern you can act on.

Should I watch sustained wind or gusts?
Gusts, if you have to choose. They correspond better to what you actually experience and they capture the buffeting, noisy days that people most often report as difficult.
What gust speed is worth worrying about?
There is no universal threshold. Many people who react describe gusts above 50 to 60 km/h as noticeable, but this varies enormously and depends on the wind type. Your own log is the only authority.
Why do apps disagree about wind speed?
They run different models, and they may report at different heights or averaging periods. Disagreement between sources is itself information: it means confidence is low.
Does wind direction really matter that much?
In regions with distinct air masses or named winds, yes — it is often more informative than speed. In flat, maritime regions with less variety, less so.
How does wind relate to barometric pressure?
Wind speed is set by the pressure gradient, the rate at which pressure changes across distance. Strong wind means a steep gradient nearby, though not necessarily a large change at your own location.
Is a forecast for my nearest airport good enough?
Usually yes for the general pattern, but airports are deliberately sited in open, exposed locations. Sheltered urban and valley sites often record noticeably lower speeds than the airport figure.
What about wind in the mountains?
Terrain complicates everything, and standard model output can be poor in complex topography. Mountain regions usually have specialist local forecasts that handle valley and slope effects better.

Look at gusts rather than sustained speed, learn which direction brings your difficult wind, and pay attention to timing rather than daily maxima. Wind forecasts are trustworthy three to five days ahead, which is enough lead time to lighten a day rather than simply endure it.
